Sine, cosine and tangent are not injective over their whole domain, because they are periodic: to define an inverse we must restrict them to an interval on which they are bijective. This is how arcsin,arccos,arctan\arcsin,\arccos,\arctan arise, returning an angle from a value. They are indispensable whenever an angle must be computed from a ratio, from the inclination of a line to angles of elevation and of refraction.

Definizione — Le funzioni goniometriche inverse

  • Restringendo sin\sin a [π2,π2]\left[-\tfrac{\pi}{2}, \tfrac{\pi}{2}\right] si ottiene una funzione biunivoca con [1,1][-1,1]. La sua inversa è arcsin:[1,1][π2,π2]\arcsin:[-1,1]\to\left[-\tfrac{\pi}{2}, \tfrac{\pi}{2}\right].
La sua inversa è arctan:R(π2,π2)\arctan:\mathbb{R}\to\left(-\tfrac{\pi}{2}, \tfrac{\pi}{2}\right).

Sine, cosine and tangent are not injective over their whole domain (they are periodic), so they have no inverses in the strict sense. To define an inverse we must restrict them to an interval on which they are injective.

Definition — The inverse trigonometric functions

  • Restricting sin\sin to [π2,π2]\left[-\tfrac{\pi}{2}, \tfrac{\pi}{2}\right] gives a bijection with [1,1][-1,1]. Its inverse is arcsin:[1,1][π2,π2]\arcsin:[-1,1]\to\left[-\tfrac{\pi}{2}, \tfrac{\pi}{2}\right].
  • Restricting cos\cos to [0,π][0,\pi] gives a bijection with [1,1][-1,1]. Its inverse is arccos:[1,1][0,π]\arccos:[-1,1]\to[0,\pi].
  • Restricting tan\tan to (π2,π2)\left(-\tfrac{\pi}{2}, \tfrac{\pi}{2}\right) gives a bijection with R\mathbb{R}. Its inverse is arctan:R(π2,π2)\arctan:\mathbb{R}\to\left(-\tfrac{\pi}{2}, \tfrac{\pi}{2}\right).

Each inverse returns the angle (in the chosen interval) whose sine, cosine or tangent equals the given number.

Remark — The role of arctan in coordinate geometry

The gradient of a line y=mx+qy=mx+q is related to its angle of inclination θ\theta with the xx-axis by the relation m=tanθm = \tan\theta, whence θ=arctanm\theta = \arctan m. It is thanks to this relation that we can speak of the “angle between two lines” starting from their gradients.

A distanza d=10d=10 m: θ=arctan371,57°\theta = \arctan 3 \approx 71{,}57°.

Esempio 3 — Rifrazione (cenno)

La legge di Snell lega l’angolo di incidenza θi\theta_i e di rifrazione θr\theta_r all’indice nn: sinθi=nsinθr\sin\theta_i = n\sin\theta_r. Conoscendo θi\theta_i e nn, l’angolo rifratto è θr=arcsin ⁣(sinθi/n)\theta_r = \arcsin\!\left(\sin\theta_i/n\right). Per acqua-aria n=1,33n=1{,}33 e θi=45°\theta_i=45°: θr=arcsin(0,531)32,1°\theta_r = \arcsin(0{,}531) \approx 32{,}1°.

The inverse trigonometric functions crop up wherever an angle must be computed from a ratio. Three typical examples.

Example 1 — Angle of elevation

An observer sees the top of a tower of height h=30h=30 m, from a horizontal distance d=50d=50 m. The angle of elevation θ\theta with respect to the ground satisfies: tanθ=hd=3050=0,6    θ=arctan(0,6)30,96°.\tan\theta = \frac{h}{d} = \frac{30}{50} = 0{,}6 \;\Rightarrow\; \theta = \arctan(0{,}6) \approx 30{,}96°. At distance d=10d=10 m: θ=arctan371,57°\theta = \arctan 3 \approx 71{,}57°. As one approaches the tower, the angle grows towards 90°90° (vertical asymptote of tan\tan).

Example 2 — Angle between two lines

Given r:y=2x+1r: y = 2x+1 and s:y=12x+3s: y = -\tfrac12 x + 3, with gradients m1=2m_1=2, m2=1/2m_2=-1/2. Since m1m2=1m_1 m_2 = -1, the lines are perpendicular (angle 90°90°). In general the angle α\alpha between two lines is obtained from tanα=m1m21+m1m2,α=arctan ⁣(m1m21+m1m2).\tan\alpha = \frac{m_1 - m_2}{1+m_1 m_2},\qquad \alpha = \arctan\!\left(\frac{m_1-m_2}{1+m_1 m_2}\right). If 1+m1m2=01+m_1m_2 = 0 the denominator vanishes and the angle is π/2\pi/2 (perpendicularity).

Example 3 — Refraction (an outline)

Snell’s law relates the angle of incidence θi\theta_i and of refraction θr\theta_r to the index nn: sinθi=nsinθr\sin\theta_i = n\sin\theta_r. Knowing θi\theta_i and nn, the refracted angle is θr=arcsin ⁣(sinθi/n)\theta_r = \arcsin\!\left(\sin\theta_i/n\right). For water-air n=1,33n=1{,}33 and θi=45°\theta_i=45°: θr=arcsin(0,531)32,1°\theta_r = \arcsin(0{,}531) \approx 32{,}1°.

Remark — A look ahead: derivatives of the inverse trigonometric functions (Year 5)

In Year 5 we shall see that the inverse trigonometric functions have very elegant derivatives, which are derived from the theorem on the derivative of the inverse function: ddxarcsinx=11x2,ddxarccosx=11x2,ddxarctanx=11+x2.\frac{d}{dx}\arcsin x = \frac{1}{\sqrt{1-x^2}}, \quad \frac{d}{dx}\arccos x = -\frac{1}{\sqrt{1-x^2}}, \quad \frac{d}{dx}\arctan x = \frac{1}{1+x^2}. As an important consequence for integrals: dx1+x2=arctanx+C,dx1x2=arcsinx+C.\int \frac{dx}{1+x^2} = \arctan x + C, \quad \int \frac{dx}{\sqrt{1-x^2}} = \arcsin x + C. So arctan\arctan and arcsin\arcsin “answer” integrals that would otherwise look mysterious. They are at the heart of many trigonometric substitutions in analysis.
