Esistono funzioni che, pur essendo continue, in alcuni punti non ammettono derivata: la tangente non esiste come retta univoca, oppure esiste ma è verticale. Confrontando la derivata destra e la derivata sinistra si classificano i tre casi classici: punto angoloso, cuspide, flesso a tangente verticale.
There exist functions that, although continuous, admit no derivative at certain points: the tangent does not exist as a unique line, or it exists but is vertical. By comparing the right-hand derivative and the left-hand derivative one classifies the three classic cases: corner point, cusp, inflection with vertical tangent.
