The properties of logarithms translate the rules of powers into rules on logarithms: products become sums, quotients become differences, powers become products. They are the tool with which expressions are simplified and equations are solved. The section states them, proves one of them and warns against the most widespread “non-properties”.
\log_a(xy) &= \log_a x + \log_a y & &\text{(prodotto)} \\ \log_a\left(\tfrac{x}{y}\right) &= \log_a x - \log_a y & &\text{(quoziente)} \\ \log_a\left(x^k\right) &= k\cdot \log_a x & &\text{(potenza)} \\ \log_a 1 &= 0,\quad \log_a a = 1 & &\text{(valori notevoli)} \end{aligned}$$

The following properties descend directly from the properties of powers and are the basis of every manipulation with logarithms.
Property — Properties of logarithms
For every and every :
\log_a(xy) &= \log_a x + \log_a y & &\text{(product)} \\ \log_a\left(\tfrac{x}{y}\right) &= \log_a x - \log_a y & &\text{(quotient)} \\ \log_a\left(x^k\right) &= k\cdot \log_a x & &\text{(power)} \\ \log_a 1 &= 0,\quad \log_a a = 1 & &\text{(notable values)} \end{aligned}$$
In words: the logarithm of a product is the sum of the logarithms, the logarithm of a quotient is the difference, and an exponent inside the argument “comes down” in front of the logarithm as a factor.

The properties hold only for products and quotients: applying them to sums is the most widespread mistake.
Warning — Frequent non-properties
. The logarithm is not additive over sums: it is only over products. This mistake is the most widespread and must be avoided at all costs.
Similarly in general: the power property concerns the case in which the exponent is inside the argument, not outside.
