There is a more powerful and unified way to describe a pencil: starting from two given lines, called generators. Combining them linearly yields a pencil that is proper or improper according to whether the two lines are incident or parallel. This section presents the two-generator form, the convenient single-parameter notation and the pitfall of the generator excluded from the parametrisation.
- un fascio proprio se e sono incidenti, con sostegno il loro punto di intersezione;

There is a more powerful and unified way to describe a pencil: to build it from two given lines.
Property — Pencil with two generators
Let and be two distinct lines, written in implicit form. The equation as the pair varies, describes:
- a proper pencil if and are incident, with support their point of intersection;
- an improper pencil if and are parallel, with a common direction.
The lines and are called the generators of the pencil.
The strength of this notation is that it unifies the two types of pencil: one need only look at whether the generators meet or are parallel to know whether the pencil is proper or improper, without needing to compute the support explicitly.

Normalising in the two-generator form gives the single-parameter notation used in practice: where is the parameter of the pencil. One must remember, however, that this normalisation excludes one of the two generators: precisely, letting one formally “obtains” , but no finite value of gives .
Warning
When solving problems with , one must always check separately whether the generator is itself a solution of the problem: it is never reached by a finite value of .
Remark — How to recognise the generators of a pencil written as
If a pencil is given in the form , the two generators are simply and : one just collects everything that does not depend on into , and everything that multiplies into . If then and are incident, the pencil is proper; if they are parallel, it is improper.
Example — Finding the support of a proper pencil
Given the pencil , determine the support (if the pencil is proper).
Collecting the parameter: .
The two generators are (that is ) and (that is ). They are two incident lines (one vertical and one horizontal), so the pencil is proper with support at their point of intersection .
In the following simulation the proper pencil is generated by and : as the parameter varies, the line rotates about the support .
