Imposing a single condition on a line yields an infinite family of lines. Depending on the condition, pencils fall into two types: the proper pencil, formed by all the lines passing through the same point, and the improper pencil, formed by all the lines parallel to the same direction. This section defines both and compares them.

The first type of pencil arises when we fix a point and leave the slope of the line free.
Definition — Proper pencil
A proper pencil of lines is the set of all the lines of the plane that pass through a fixed point , called the support of the pencil. Its equation is obtained from the formula for the line through a point with variable slope: to which one must add, separately, the vertical line that is not covered by the formula because it corresponds to the case .
The parameter that runs through the pencil is the slope : as varies the line rotates about the support . The vertical line must be remembered separately, because no finite value of produces it.

Definition — Improper pencil
An improper pencil of lines is the set of all the lines of the plane parallel to a fixed direction (given by the slope ). Its equation is: where the parameter is the -intercept. The improper pencil has no “centre”: all its lines are parallel to one another.
Here the parameter that runs through the pencil is the -intercept : as varies the line translates while always keeping the same slope .

The two types of pencil are distinguished by what their lines have in common and by what they differ in.
Remark
The fundamental difference: in a proper pencil all the lines have a point in common (the support) and differ in their slope; in an improper pencil all the lines have the same slope and differ in their position.
On the left a proper pencil: all the lines rotate about the support . On the right an improper pencil: all the lines are parallel and translate keeping the same slope.
