Once you have chosen the route, you carry it out. This is the stage where you do the calculations or write the proof. It seems the most “mechanical” part of the work, yet it too has its rules. This section gathers them and puts them to work on the two guiding problems: the rectangle system and the angle-bisector proof.

In sintesi — Regole per uno svolgimento pulito

  1. Un passaggio alla volta. Non saltare righe. Meglio scrivere di più che di meno.
  2. Giustifica ogni passaggio importante.
  3. Usa i simboli in modo coerente.

In brief — Rules for a clean write-up

  1. One step at a time. Do not skip lines. Better to write too much than too little.
  2. Justify every important step. It is not enough to write ”3x=153x = 15, therefore x=5x=5”; also write which rule you used (“I divide both sides by 33, by the second principle of equivalence”).
  3. Use symbols consistently. If you have called xx the base of the rectangle, do not change it halfway through the exercise.
  4. If you reach something strange, stop. An absurd equality like 0=50=5, or an angle of 200°200°, means there is a mistake earlier: better to notice it straight away.

Esempio — Svolgere il problema del rettangolo

Dal sistema {2x+2y=24xy=32\begin{cases} 2x+2y=24 \\ xy=32 \end{cases}, isolo yy dalla prima: y=12x.y = 12 - x. Sostituisco nella seconda: x(12x)=32    x2+12x32=0    x212x+32=0.x\,(12-x) = 32 \;\Longrightarrow\; -x^2+12x-32=0 \;\Longrightarrow\; x^2-12x+32=0. Uso la formula risolutiva: x=12±1441282=12±42.x = \frac{12\pm\sqrt{144-128}}{2} = \frac{12\pm 4}{2}. Dunque x=8x=8 oppure x=4x=4.

Example — Carrying out the rectangle problem

From the system {2x+2y=24xy=32\begin{cases} 2x+2y=24 \\ xy=32 \end{cases}, I isolate yy from the first equation: y=12x.y = 12 - x. I substitute into the second: x(12x)=32    x2+12x32=0    x212x+32=0.x\,(12-x) = 32 \;\Longrightarrow\; -x^2+12x-32=0 \;\Longrightarrow\; x^2-12x+32=0. I use the quadratic formula: x=12±1441282=12±42.x = \frac{12\pm\sqrt{144-128}}{2} = \frac{12\pm 4}{2}. Hence x=8x=8 or x=4x=4. In the two cases, y=12xy=12-x gives y=4y=4 or y=8y=8. The rectangle has sides 4 cm\boxed{4\ \text{cm}} and 8 cm\boxed{8\ \text{cm}} (the two solutions correspond to the same rectangle, seen from its base or from its height).

Esempio — Svolgere la dimostrazione della bisettrice

Nei triangoli ABMABM e ACMACM abbiamo:

  • ABACAB \cong AC (per ipotesi, triangolo isoscele);
  • BAM^CAM^\widehat{BAM} \cong \widehat{CAM} (per ipotesi, AMAM è la bisettrice);
  • AMAM è lato in comune.

  • BMCMBM\cong CM     \implies AMAM è mediana;
  • AMB^AMC^\widehat{AMB}\cong\widehat{AMC}; ma i due angoli sono supplementari (formano l’angolo piatto BMCBMC), quindi ciascuno vale π2\frac{\pi}{2}     \implies AMAM è altezza. \blacksquare

Example — Carrying out the angle-bisector proof

In triangles ABMABM and ACMACM we have:

  • ABACAB \cong AC (by hypothesis, isosceles triangle);
  • BAM^CAM^\widehat{BAM} \cong \widehat{CAM} (by hypothesis, AMAM is the bisector);
  • AMAM is a common side.

By the first congruence criterion (side–angle–side): ABMACM\triangle ABM \cong \triangle ACM. From this it follows that:

  • BMCMBM\cong CM     \implies AMAM is a median;
  • AMB^AMC^\widehat{AMB}\cong\widehat{AMC}; but the two angles are supplementary (they form the straight angle BMCBMC), so each equals π2\frac{\pi}{2}     \implies AMAM is an altitude. \blacksquare
