Some fundamental limits — such as — come up again and again and must be known by heart: these are the standard limits. From them one derives a list of equivalent functions, approximations that can be substituted inside a limit to simplify calculations, provided their conditions of use are respected.
\lim_{x\to 0}\frac{\sin x}{x} &= 1 & \lim_{x\to 0}\frac{1-\cos x}{x^2} &= \frac{1}{2} \\[4pt] \lim_{x\to 0}\frac{e^x-1}{x} &= 1 & \lim_{x\to 0}\frac{\ln(1+x)}{x} &= 1 \\[4pt] \lim_{x\to 0}\frac{(1+x)^\alpha - 1}{x} &= \alpha & \lim_{x\to\pm\infty}\left(1+\frac{1}{x}\right)^x &= e \end{aligned}$$

Some limits recur so frequently that they deserve a name of their own and memorisation: these are the standard limits.
Property — Standard limits
\lim_{x\to 0}\frac{\sin x}{x} &= 1 & \lim_{x\to 0}\frac{1-\cos x}{x^2} &= \frac{1}{2} \\[4pt] \lim_{x\to 0}\frac{e^x-1}{x} &= 1 & \lim_{x\to 0}\frac{\ln(1+x)}{x} &= 1 \\[4pt] \lim_{x\to 0}\frac{(1+x)^\alpha - 1}{x} &= \alpha & \lim_{x\to\pm\infty}\left(1+\frac{1}{x}\right)^x &= e \end{aligned}$$
Each of these limits appears, before the calculation, as an indeterminate form (the first five as , the last as ): their value must therefore be learnt and recognised in order to resolve similar cases quickly.

From the standard limits one obtains a list of handy approximations. We use the symbol to denote any quantity that tends to zero (it may be , or , or , or any infinitesimal expression).

The arguments of $\sin$ and $\cos$ must be in radians.
Remark — When substitution is allowed and when it is not
These substitutions are legitimate “inside” a limit provided the substituted function appears in the numerator or denominator as a factor, not as a term added to other terms of the same order. In the latter case the second-order approximation is needed, for example .

Example — First-order substitution
Here (with ), a legitimate substitution because is a factor.
Example — When the second order is needed
The approximation is not enough: it would give , because is a sum in which the first-order term cancels. The second order is needed: , whence , and the limit is .
Comparing the two examples reveals the practical rule: substitute at first order when the function is an isolated factor; go up to second order when the first-order terms cancel out in a sum.
