A line in space is described in two equivalent ways: in parametric form, as a point plus a multiple of a direction vector (“velocity”), or in Cartesian form, as the intersection of two planes. One passes from one to the other by solving or eliminating the parameter.

Property — Parametric form

A line through the point S0\vec S_0 with direction vector v\vec v is written S=S0+vt\vec S = \vec S_0 + \vec v\,t, that is {x=x0+vxty=y0+vytz=z0+vzt,tR.\begin{cases} x = x_0+v_x t \\ y = y_0+v_y t \\ z = z_0+v_z t \end{cases}, \qquad t\in\mathbb{R}. The vector v\vec v is the “velocity” of the line: as the parameter tt varies the point S\vec S traces out the line.

Property — Cartesian form

A line can be described as the intersection of two planes: {a1x+b1y+c1z+d1=0a2x+b2y+c2z+d2=0.\begin{cases}a_1 x+b_1 y+c_1 z+d_1=0\\a_2 x+b_2 y+c_2 z+d_2=0\end{cases}. The direction vector of the line is v=n1×n2\vec v = \vec n_1\times\vec n_2, the cross product of the two normal vectors.

Since the line lies in both planes, its direction is perpendicular to both normal vectors: precisely what the cross product n1×n2\vec n_1\times\vec n_2 provides.

Remark — Switching from one form to the other

  • From Cartesian to parametric: solve the system of the two planes taking one variable as a parameter.
  • From parametric to Cartesian: eliminate the parameter tt among the three equations.
