Lagrange’s theorem generalises Rolle’s: without requiring the endpoints to be at the same height, it guarantees the existence of a point where the tangent is parallel to the secant joining the endpoints. From here follow the consequences that turn the study of the sign of the derivative into the main tool for understanding where a function increases and where it decreases.

Teorema — Lagrange

Se ff è continua su [a,b][a,b] e derivabile su (a,b)(a,b), esiste almeno un c(a,b)c\in(a,b) tale che: f(c)=f(b)f(a)ba.f'(c) = \frac{f(b)-f(a)}{b-a}.

Osservazione — Significato geometrico

Storia — Da Rolle a Cauchy

Esempio — Quesito maturità 2007: Lagrange su f(x)=x3+8f(x)=x^3+8

Dimostriamo che f(x)=x3+8f(x) = x^3+8 soddisfa il teorema di Lagrange su [2,2][-2,2] e troviamo cc.

Ipotesi: ff è un polinomio, quindi continua e derivabile ✓.

Calcolo: f(2)f(2)2(2)=(8+8)(8+8)4=164=4\dfrac{f(2)-f(-2)}{2-(-2)} = \dfrac{(8+8)-(-8+8)}{4} = \dfrac{16}{4} = 4.

Trovo cc: impongo f(c)=3c2=4    c2=43    c=±23±1,15f'(c) = 3c^2 = 4 \implies c^2 = \dfrac{4}{3} \implies c = \pm\dfrac{2}{\sqrt{3}} \approx \pm 1{,}15.

Controllo: c±1,15(2,2)c\approx \pm 1{,}15 \in (-2,2) ✓.

Lagrange’s theorem, also called the mean value theorem, states that for a well-behaved function the average slope over the interval is realised as the instantaneous slope at at least one interior point.

Theorem — Lagrange

If ff is continuous on [a,b][a,b] and differentiable on (a,b)(a,b), there exists at least one c(a,b)c\in(a,b) such that: f(c)=f(b)f(a)ba.f'(c) = \frac{f(b)-f(a)}{b-a}.

Remark — Geometric meaning

The right-hand side is the gradient of the secant through (a,f(a))(a,f(a)) and (b,f(b))(b,f(b)). The theorem says that there exists at least one point cc where the tangent is parallel to the secant.

History — From Rolle to Cauchy

The core of the result goes back to Michel Rolle, who in 1691 proved the case f(a)=f(b)f(a)=f(b) for polynomials, curiously as a critic of the “new” infinitesimal methods (Boyer). The general mean value statement and its systematic use took hold only a century later with Joseph-Louis Lagrange, who in the Théorie des fonctions analytiques (1797) made it a foundation of the calculus (Katz). It was Augustin-Louis Cauchy, however, in the Cours d’analyse and the École Polytechnique lectures of the 1820s, who gave it its rigorous modern form and generalised it into the theorem bearing his name, f(b)f(a)g(b)g(a)=f(c)g(c)\dfrac{f(b)-f(a)}{g(b)-g(a)}=\dfrac{f'(c)}{g'(c)}, the basis of l’Hôpital’s rule (Stillwell).

At cc the tangent (red) is parallel to the secant (orange) joining the endpoints (a,f(a))(a,f(a)) and (b,f(b))(b,f(b)).

Example — Maturità exam question 2007: Lagrange on f(x)=x3+8f(x)=x^3+8

We show that f(x)=x3+8f(x) = x^3+8 satisfies Lagrange’s theorem on [2,2][-2,2] and we find cc.

Hypotheses: ff is a polynomial, hence continuous and differentiable ✓.

Computation: f(2)f(2)2(2)=(8+8)(8+8)4=164=4\dfrac{f(2)-f(-2)}{2-(-2)} = \dfrac{(8+8)-(-8+8)}{4} = \dfrac{16}{4} = 4.

Finding cc: I impose f(c)=3c2=4    c2=43    c=±23±1,15f'(c) = 3c^2 = 4 \implies c^2 = \dfrac{4}{3} \implies c = \pm\dfrac{2}{\sqrt{3}} \approx \pm 1{,}15.

Check: c±1,15(2,2)c\approx \pm 1{,}15 \in (-2,2) ✓.

In the simulation below you can move the endpoints aa and bb: the point cc updates in real time and the tangent at cc always stays parallel to the chord ABAB.

Drag the sliders $a$ and $b$: the tangent at $c$ is always parallel to the chord $AB$.

From the hypotheses of Lagrange’s theorem the links between the sign of the derivative and the behaviour of the function follow directly: these are the properties that make the derivative the foremost tool for studying a function.

Property — Fundamental consequences of Lagrange

  • If f(x)>0f'(x)>0 for every x(a,b)x\in(a,b)     \implies ff is strictly increasing on [a,b][a,b].
  • If f(x)<0f'(x)<0 for every x(a,b)x\in(a,b)     \implies ff is strictly decreasing.
  • If f(x)=0f'(x)=0 for every x(a,b)x\in(a,b)     \implies ff is constant.

These consequences turn the study of the sign of the derivative into the main tool for understanding where a function increases and where it decreases.
