Raising to a power sums up a repeated multiplication. After the definition — extended consistently to the exponent zero and to negative exponents — we collect the five calculation properties and point out the most common pitfalls, such as “tower” powers.

Definizione — Potenza

Dati aRa\in\mathbb{R} (base) e nNn\in\mathbb{N}, con n1n\ge 1 (esponente): an=aaan volte,a0=1    (a0),an=1an    (a0).a^n = \underbrace{a \cdot a \cdot \ldots \cdot a}_{n \text{ volte}}, \qquad a^0 = 1 \;\;(a\neq 0), \qquad a^{-n} = \frac{1}{a^n} \;\;(a\neq 0).

Raising to a power is an operation that appears continually in mathematics: it is the compact way of writing a repeated multiplication.

Definition — Power

Given aRa\in\mathbb{R} (base) and nNn\in\mathbb{N}, with n1n\ge 1 (exponent): an=aaan volte,a0=1    (a0),an=1an    (a0).a^n = \underbrace{a \cdot a \cdot \ldots \cdot a}_{n \text{ volte}}, \qquad a^0 = 1 \;\;(a\neq 0), \qquad a^{-n} = \frac{1}{a^n} \;\;(a\neq 0).

The two extensions — exponent 00 and negative exponent — are not arbitrary: they are chosen precisely so that the properties of powers continue to hold.

Siano a,bR{0}a,b\in\mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\} e m,nZm,n\in\mathbb{Z}:

UguaglianzaNome
aman=am+na^m \cdot a^n = a^{m+n}prodotto di potenze con la stessa base

From the definition of a power follow five calculation rules that we will use constantly to simplify expressions.

Property — of powers

Let a,bR{0}a,b\in\mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\} and m,nZm,n\in\mathbb{Z}:

EqualityName
aman=am+na^m \cdot a^n = a^{m+n}product of powers with the same base
aman=amn\dfrac{a^m}{a^n} = a^{m-n}quotient of powers with the same base
(am)n=amn(a^m)^n = a^{m \cdot n}power of a power
(ab)n=anbn(a\cdot b)^n = a^n \cdot b^npower of a product
(ab)n=anbn\left(\dfrac{a}{b}\right)^n = \dfrac{a^n}{b^n}power of a quotient

The first three rules concern powers with the same base; the last two concern powers with the same exponent.

  • (ab)n=(ba)n\left(\dfrac{a}{b}\right)^{-n} = \left(\dfrac{b}{a}\right)^n: un esponente negativo su una frazione equivale a scambiare numeratore e denominatore e cambiare segno all’esponente.

Two situations lend themselves easily to mistakes: “tower” powers (an exponent of an exponent) and powers with a negative exponent of a fraction.

Beware

  • 323=38=65613^{2^3} = 3^8 = 6561, not (32)3=93=729(3^2)^3 = 9^3 = 729. Without brackets, the power written higher up is carried out first!
  • (ab)n=(ba)n\left(\dfrac{a}{b}\right)^{-n} = \left(\dfrac{b}{a}\right)^n: a negative exponent on a fraction is equivalent to swapping numerator and denominator and changing the sign of the exponent.

In the first case the tower abca^{b^c} is read from the top: first bcb^c is calculated, then aa is raised to that result.
