An exponential equation has the unknown in the exponent. To solve it one exploits the injectivity of the exponential function, reducing the equation to a simpler form. There are three main methods — same base, substitution and passing to the logarithm — which here we introduce and demonstrate on worked examples.

In sintesi — Metodi principali

  1. Stessa base.

To solve an exponential equation one always tries to reduce it to a form in which one can “remove the base” or substitute a new unknown.

In summary — Main methods

  1. Same base. If both sides can be written as powers with the same base, for example af(x)=ag(x)a^{f(x)} = a^{g(x)}, then — by the injectivity of the exponential function — one can “remove the base” and reduce the equation to f(x)=g(x)f(x) = g(x).
  2. Substitution. If an expression of the form axa^x appears several times in the equation (or a2x=(ax)2a^{2x} = (a^x)^2), one sets t=axt = a^x (with the condition t>0t > 0) and solves an equation in tt — often a quadratic. Finally one returns to xx by imposing ax=ta^x = t for each root t>0t > 0 found.
  3. Passing to the logarithm. If nothing better can be done, one applies the logarithm (next chapter) to bring the exponent xx into “linear” form. We shall see this after having defined the logarithms.

The first two methods are the ones we shall use straight away; the third requires the logarithm and will be dealt with in the following chapter.

Esempio — Stessa base

Risolvere 2x+1=8x12^{x+1} = 8^{x-1}.

Poiché 8=238 = 2^3, si ha 8x1=23(x1)=23x38^{x-1} = 2^{3(x-1)} = 2^{3x-3}. Per iniettività dell’esponenziale: x+1=3x3    2x=4    x=2.x + 1 = 3x - 3 \iff -2x = -4 \iff x = 2.

Esempio — Sostituzione

Risolvere 4x32x+2=04^x - 3\cdot 2^x + 2 = 0.

Osserviamo che 4x=(22)x=(2x)24^x = (2^2)^x = (2^x)^2. Ponendo t=2xt = 2^x con t>0t > 0: t23t+2=0    (t1)(t2)=0    t=1  t=2.t^2 - 3t + 2 = 0 \iff (t-1)(t-2) = 0 \iff t = 1 \ \vee\ t = 2. Entrambe le soluzioni sono positive, quindi accettabili. Tornando a xx:

  • 2x=1=20    x=02^x = 1 = 2^0 \implies x = 0;
  • 2x=2=21    x=12^x = 2 = 2^1 \implies x = 1.

Let us see the first two methods in action: reduction to the same base and substitution.

Example — Same base

Solve 2x+1=8x12^{x+1} = 8^{x-1}.

Since 8=238 = 2^3, we have 8x1=23(x1)=23x38^{x-1} = 2^{3(x-1)} = 2^{3x-3}. By injectivity of the exponential: x+1=3x3    2x=4    x=2.x + 1 = 3x - 3 \iff -2x = -4 \iff x = 2.

Example — Substitution

Solve 4x32x+2=04^x - 3\cdot 2^x + 2 = 0.

Observe that 4x=(22)x=(2x)24^x = (2^2)^x = (2^x)^2. Setting t=2xt = 2^x with t>0t > 0: t23t+2=0    (t1)(t2)=0    t=1  t=2.t^2 - 3t + 2 = 0 \iff (t-1)(t-2) = 0 \iff t = 1 \ \vee\ t = 2. Both solutions are positive, hence acceptable. Returning to xx:

  • 2x=1=20    x=02^x = 1 = 2^0 \implies x = 0;
  • 2x=2=21    x=12^x = 2 = 2^1 \implies x = 1.
