Not all functions behave the same way when faced with the questions “how many inputs end up on the same value?” and “are all the values of the codomain reached?”. The answers define three fundamental properties — injectivity, surjectivity and bijectivity — which can be read at a glance on the graph with the horizontal line test.

Tre proprietà classificano le funzioni in base a come “coprono” il codominio.

Definizione — Iniettiva, suriettiva, biunivoca

Una funzione f:ABf:A\to B si dice:

  • iniettiva se x1x2    f(x1)f(x2)x_1\ne x_2 \implies f(x_1) \ne f(x_2), cioè se a elementi distinti del dominio corrispondono immagini distinte;
  • suriettiva se Im(f)=B\mathrm{Im}(f) = B, cioè se ogni elemento del codominio è immagine di almeno un elemento del dominio;

Three properties classify functions according to how they “cover” the codomain.

Definition — Injective, surjective, bijective

A function f:ABf:A\to B is said to be:

  • injective if x1x2    f(x1)f(x2)x_1\ne x_2 \implies f(x_1) \ne f(x_2), that is, if distinct elements of the domain correspond to distinct images;
  • surjective if Im(f)=B\mathrm{Im}(f) = B, that is, if every element of the codomain is the image of at least one element of the domain;
  • bijective (or one-to-one and onto) if it is both injective and surjective.

Osservazione — Test grafici

Esempio

  • f(x)=x2f(x)=x^2 su R\mathbb{R} non è iniettiva (f(2)=f(2)=4f(2)=f(-2)=4) né suriettiva su R\mathbb{R} (non raggiunge valori negativi).
  • f(x)=x3f(x)=x^3 su R\mathbb{R} è iniettiva e suriettiva: biunivoca.
  • f(x)=1xf(x)=\tfrac{1}{x} su R{0}\mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\} verso R{0}\mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\} è biunivoca.

For a real function of a real variable, injectivity and surjectivity can be recognised by looking at how horizontal lines meet the graph. Let us compare y=x2y=x^2 (not injective) and y=x3y=x^3 (injective): the line y=3y=3 intersects the first at two points, the second at just one.

y=x2y=x^2 is not injective: the line y=3y=3 meets it at two points, with abscissae x=±3±1,73x=\pm\sqrt{3}\approx\pm 1{,}73.

y=x3y=x^3 is injective: the line y=3y=3 meets it at a single point, with abscissa x=331,44x=\sqrt[3]{3}\approx 1{,}44.

Remark — Graphical tests

For a real function of a real variable, with graph in the Cartesian plane:

  • ff is injective     \iff every horizontal line intersects the graph at at most one point.
  • ff is surjective (onto the codomain R\mathbb{R})     \iff every horizontal line intersects the graph at at least one point.
  • ff is bijective     \iff every horizontal line intersects the graph at exactly one point.

Example

  • f(x)=x2f(x)=x^2 on R\mathbb{R} is neither injective (f(2)=f(2)=4f(2)=f(-2)=4) nor surjective onto R\mathbb{R} (it does not reach negative values).
  • f(x)=x3f(x)=x^3 on R\mathbb{R} is injective and surjective: bijective.
  • f(x)=1xf(x)=\tfrac{1}{x} from R{0}\mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\} to R{0}\mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\} is bijective.
