The hyperbola is defined as a locus starting from two fixed points, the foci: by changing the sum into the difference of the distances with respect to the ellipse one obtains a completely different curve. From this definition, with the same algebraic procedure used for the ellipse, one derives the canonical equation.

The hyperbola is the third non-degenerate conic. Its definition mirrors that of the ellipse, but with one decisive difference: instead of the sum of the distances from the two foci one considers their difference (in absolute value).

Definition — Hyperbola

A hyperbola is the locus of points PP in the plane such that d(P,F1)d(P,F2)=2a,2a<d(F1,F2),\bigl| d(P,F_1) - d(P,F_2) \bigr| = 2a, \qquad 2a < d(F_1, F_2), with F1,F2F_1, F_2 two fixed points called foci.

The condition 2a<d(F1,F2)2a < d(F_1, F_2) is the opposite of the one for the ellipse and guarantees that the locus exists. Indeed, by the triangle inequality one always has d(P,F1)d(P,F2)d(F1,F2),\bigl| d(P,F_1) - d(P,F_2) \bigr| \le d(F_1, F_2), with equality only for the points on the line through F1F_1 and F2F_2: if we required a difference greater than or equal to d(F1,F2)d(F_1,F_2) we would find no point at all.

By placing the foci symmetrically with respect to the origin on the xx-axis, the definition of the hyperbola translates into a particularly simple equation, called the canonical one.

Property — Canonical equation

With F1,2(c;0)F_{1,2}(\mp c; 0), c>a>0c > a > 0, the hyperbola has canonical form x2a2y2b2=1,b2=c2a2.\frac{x^2}{a^2} - \frac{y^2}{b^2} = 1,\qquad b^2 = c^2 - a^2.

Note the minus sign in place of the plus: it is this that distinguishes the equation of the hyperbola from that of the ellipse. The procedure to derive it is analogous to the one for the ellipse: one isolates a radical, squares, isolates the remaining radical and squares again.
