An equation is called irrational when the unknown appears under the radical sign. To solve it, one isolates the root and squares — but beware: this step can introduce “false” (extraneous) solutions that must be eliminated by checking. This section explains the method step by step and the compact scheme A(x)=B(x)\sqrt{A(x)}=B(x).

  2. Fai la radice: 9=3\sqrt{9}=3.
  3. Decidi il risultato, es. x=8x=8.
  4. Scrivi 99 come espressione che coinvolga 88, es. x+1=9x+1=9.
  5. L’equazione è x+1=3\sqrt{x+1}=3, con soluzione x=8x=8.

An equation is called irrational when the unknown appears under the radical sign. To solve it, one isolates the root and squares; this step, however, can introduce “false” solutions that must be eliminated by checking.

Example — How to invent an equation with xx under a root

  1. Write an identity between two numbers that are perfect squares, e.g. 9=99=9.
  2. Take the root: 9=3\sqrt{9}=3.
  3. Decide the result, e.g. x=8x=8.
  4. Write 99 as an expression involving 88, e.g. x+1=9x+1=9.
  5. The equation is x+1=3\sqrt{x+1}=3, with solution x=8x=8.

  4. Elevare al quadrato entrambi i membri.
  5. Risolvere l’equazione risultante.

Osservazione — Schema compatto A(x)=B(x)\sqrt{A(x)}=B(x)

The standard method for an irrational equation with one square root isolates the radical, squares it and then checks the solutions.

In brief — Solving method

To solve an irrational equation with a square root:

  1. Isolate the radical on one side.
  2. Determine the domain of existence: argument 0\ge 0.
  3. Determine the sign-agreement condition: the member without the root must be 0\ge 0.
  4. Square both members.
  5. Solve the resulting equation.
  6. Check that the solutions satisfy the domain of existence and the sign-agreement condition (discard the extraneous solutions).

Remark — Compact scheme A(x)=B(x)\sqrt{A(x)}=B(x)

Many irrational equations appear in the “isolated” form A(x)=B(x)\sqrt{A(x)}=B(x). In that case the equivalent system is: A(x)=B(x)    {B(x)0A(x)=B2(x)\sqrt{A(x)}=B(x) \iff \begin{cases} B(x)\ge 0 \\ A(x) = B^2(x) \end{cases} The existence condition A(x)0A(x)\ge 0 is optional: if A(x)=B2(x)A(x)=B^2(x), then automatically A(x)0A(x)\ge 0 because a square cannot be negative. It remains necessary, however, to write the domain of existence for all the other roots that may be present in the equation.

Esempio 1 — Nessuna soluzione

x2x+1+3=0x - 2\sqrt{x+1} + 3 = 0.

Isoliamo: 2x+1=3x    x+1=x+32-2\sqrt{x+1} = -3-x \implies \sqrt{x+1} = \dfrac{x+3}{2}.

C.E.: x+10    x1x+1\ge 0 \implies x\ge -1.

C.C.S.: x+320    x3\dfrac{x+3}{2}\ge 0 \implies x\ge -3.   C.E. totale: x1x\ge -1.

Eleviamo al quadrato: x+1=(x+3)24    4x+4=x2+6x+9    x2+2x+5=0x+1 = \frac{(x+3)^2}{4} \implies 4x+4 = x^2+6x+9 \implies x^2+2x+5=0 Δ=420=16<0\Delta = 4-20 = -16 < 0: nessuna soluzione.

Esempio 2 — Una soluzione estranea da scartare

8x2x+6=0\sqrt{8-x}-2x+6=0.

Isoliamo: 8x=2x6\sqrt{8-x}=2x-6.

C.E.: 8x0    x88-x\ge 0 \implies x\le 8.

C.C.S.: 2x60    x32x-6\ge 0 \implies x\ge 3.   C.E. totale: 3x83\le x\le 8.

Eleviamo al quadrato: 8x=(2x6)2=4x224x+36    4x223x+28=08-x = (2x-6)^2 = 4x^2-24x+36 \implies 4x^2-23x+28=0 Δ=529448=81=92\Delta = 529-448 = 81 = 9^2 xA=23+98=4( in [3,8]),xB=2398=74(74<3, scartata)x_A = \frac{23+9}{8} = 4 \quad(\checkmark\ \text{in } [3,8]), \qquad x_B = \frac{23-9}{8} = \frac{7}{4} \quad(\tfrac{7}{4}<3,\ \text{scartata})

Verifica: 842(4)+6=28+6=0\sqrt{8-4}-2(4)+6 = 2-8+6 = 0 ✓.

Two worked examples that show the method in action: in the first the equation has no solutions, in the second one of the two solutions is extraneous and must be discarded.

Example 1 — No solution

x2x+1+3=0x - 2\sqrt{x+1} + 3 = 0.

Isolate: 2x+1=3x    x+1=x+32-2\sqrt{x+1} = -3-x \implies \sqrt{x+1} = \dfrac{x+3}{2}.

Domain of existence: x+10    x1x+1\ge 0 \implies x\ge -1.

Sign-agreement condition: x+320    x3\dfrac{x+3}{2}\ge 0 \implies x\ge -3.   Total domain of existence: x1x\ge -1.

Square: x+1=(x+3)24    4x+4=x2+6x+9    x2+2x+5=0x+1 = \frac{(x+3)^2}{4} \implies 4x+4 = x^2+6x+9 \implies x^2+2x+5=0 Δ=420=16<0\Delta = 4-20 = -16 < 0: no solution.

Example 2 — An extraneous solution to discard

8x2x+6=0\sqrt{8-x}-2x+6=0.

Isolate: 8x=2x6\sqrt{8-x}=2x-6.

Domain of existence: 8x0    x88-x\ge 0 \implies x\le 8.

Sign-agreement condition: 2x60    x32x-6\ge 0 \implies x\ge 3.   Total domain of existence: 3x83\le x\le 8.

Square: 8x=(2x6)2=4x224x+36    4x223x+28=08-x = (2x-6)^2 = 4x^2-24x+36 \implies 4x^2-23x+28=0 Δ=529448=81=92\Delta = 529-448 = 81 = 9^2 xA=23+98=4( in [3,8]),xB=2398=74(74<3, scartata)x_A = \frac{23+9}{8} = 4 \quad(\checkmark\ \text{in } [3,8]), \qquad x_B = \frac{23-9}{8} = \frac{7}{4} \quad(\tfrac{7}{4}<3,\ \text{scartata})

Check: 842(4)+6=28+6=0\sqrt{8-4}-2(4)+6 = 2-8+6 = 0 ✓.
