Vieta’s formulas find their natural application in symmetric systems: systems in which the unknowns xx and yy appear “interchangeably”, that is, swapping xx with yy does not change the system. By introducing the sum S=x+yS=x+y and the product P=xyP=xy as new unknowns, these systems are solved elegantly and quickly.

A system is said to be symmetric when the unknowns xx and yy appear interchangeably: swapping xx with yy leaves the system unchanged. In these cases it is convenient to change unknowns, passing to the sum S=x+yS=x+y and the product P=xyP=xy.

Property — Sum-product substitution

When a system involves the unknowns x,yx,y only through their sum S=x+yS=x+y and their product P=xyP=xy, one substitutes SS and PP, solves, and then recovers x,yx,y from the equation: t2St+P=0.t^2-St+P=0.

The equation t2St+P=0t^2-St+P=0 is precisely the one that has xx and yy as its solutions: this is seen from Vieta’s formulas, since the sum of its roots is SS and the product is PP.

Many symmetric expressions in xx and yy can be rewritten in terms of the sum S=x+yS=x+y and the product P=xyP=xy. Having them to hand speeds up the solving of symmetric systems.

Observation — Useful identities

x2+y2=S22P,x3+y3=S33SP.x^2+y^2 = S^2-2P, \qquad x^3+y^3 = S^3-3SP.

Thanks to these identities, even equations that at first sight seem to contain powers of the unknowns turn into equations in SS and PP alone.

Esempio

{1x+1y=1235xy+yx=7435C.E.: x0,y0.\begin{cases} \dfrac{1}{x}+\dfrac{1}{y}=\dfrac{12}{35} \\[6pt] \dfrac{x}{y}+\dfrac{y}{x}=\dfrac{74}{35} \end{cases} \qquad\text{C.E.: } x\neq 0,\, y\neq 0. La prima equazione dà SP=1235\dfrac{S}{P}=\dfrac{12}{35}; la seconda S22PP=7435\dfrac{S^2-2P}{P}=\dfrac{74}{35}.

Dalla prima: P=35S12P=\dfrac{35S}{12}. Sostituendo nella seconda: 35S2144P=0    35S214435S12=0    35S(S12)=0.35S^2 - 144P = 0 \implies 35S^2-144\cdot\frac{35S}{12}=0 \implies 35S(S-12)=0. S=0S=0 non è accettabile (C.E.), dunque S=12S=12, P=35P=35. t212t+35=0    (t7)(t5)=0    (x,y)=(7,5) o (5,7)t^2-12t+35=0 \implies (t-7)(t-5)=0 \implies \boxed{(x,y)=(7,5) \text{ o } (5,7)}

Example

{1x+1y=1235xy+yx=7435Existence conditions: x0,y0.\begin{cases} \dfrac{1}{x}+\dfrac{1}{y}=\dfrac{12}{35} \\[6pt] \dfrac{x}{y}+\dfrac{y}{x}=\dfrac{74}{35} \end{cases} \qquad\text{Existence conditions: } x\neq 0,\, y\neq 0. The first equation gives SP=1235\dfrac{S}{P}=\dfrac{12}{35}; the second S22PP=7435\dfrac{S^2-2P}{P}=\dfrac{74}{35}.

From the first: P=35S12P=\dfrac{35S}{12}. Substituting into the second: 35S2144P=0    35S214435S12=0    35S(S12)=0.35S^2 - 144P = 0 \implies 35S^2-144\cdot\frac{35S}{12}=0 \implies 35S(S-12)=0. S=0S=0 is not acceptable (existence conditions), hence S=12S=12, P=35P=35. t212t+35=0    (t7)(t5)=0    (x,y)=(7,5) or (5,7)t^2-12t+35=0 \implies (t-7)(t-5)=0 \implies \boxed{(x,y)=(7,5) \text{ or } (5,7)}
