What happens if some coefficients of the equation are not fixed numbers, but letters? The equation becomes literal or parametric and solving it requires a discussion: we must examine the different cases separately, because the behaviour of the equation — unique solution, infinitely many solutions or none — changes as the parameters vary.

So far the coefficients of our equations have been numbers. But nothing stops us from leaving some of them “undetermined”, represented by letters.
Definition — Literal equation
A literal equation is an equation in which, besides the unknown , one or more parameters appear (letters representing unspecified numbers). Solving it requires a discussion as the parameters vary.
The discussion is necessary because one and the same form can behave in different ways: dividing by a coefficient is permitted only if that coefficient is not zero, and it is precisely the parameter values that make it zero that generate the special cases to be treated separately.

Esempio
Risolvere al variare di .
Raccogliamo la : , cioè .
Discussione:
- Se e : il coefficiente , dunque
- Se : l’equazione diventa , sempre vera indeterminata (infinite soluzioni).
- Se : l’equazione diventa , e occorre distinguere ancora:
- se : indeterminata;

Let us see how a discussion is carried out in practice, distinguishing all the cases that the parameters can generate.
Example
Solve as vary.
We collect the : , that is .
Discussion:
- If and : the coefficient , hence
- If : the equation becomes , always true indeterminate (infinitely many solutions).
- If : the equation becomes , and we must distinguish further:
- if : indeterminate;
- if : impossible (no solution).
The example shows the general logic: we isolate the coefficient of the unknown, set it to zero to find the “critical” values of the parameters and analyse each of them separately.
