Percentages appear everywhere in everyday sums: prices, taxes, discounts. They are all cases of repeated increase or decrease, that is, of multiplications by a factor. In this section we learn to compute discounts and mark-ups, to apply and strip out VAT, and to distinguish the margin on the selling price from the mark-up on the cost — a distinction that is always a source of confusion.

Discounts and mark-ups are the two most common commercial cases of percentage decrease and increase. In both, the starting price is multiplied by a single factor.
Definition — Discount and mark-up
A discount of on a price leads to a new price A mark-up of is instead
Recognising in and the multiplicative factors seen for decreases and increases lets us chain several operations simply by multiplying the factors together.

When two discounts are applied to a price in sequence, the temptation is to add the percentages. This is a mistake: discounts do not add up, their factors are multiplied.
Example — Seasonal sales
A garment costing EUR is discounted by , then a further promotion applies a second discount of on the already-reduced price.
- After the first discount: EUR.
- After the second: EUR.
Overall discount: (not : discounts do not add up, their factors are multiplied).
The overall factor corresponds to a single discount of , not . Adding the percentages always overestimates the real discount.

VAT is the most familiar of percentage mark-ups: it is applied to the net price to obtain the final one. The tricky point is the inverse operation, that is, working back from the VAT-inclusive price to the taxable amount.
Definition — VAT and stripping it out
VAT (value added tax, in Italy standard, reduced, super-reduced) is computed on the taxable price: where is the rate in decimal form ( for ). To strip out the VAT from a VAT-inclusive price we divide:
Applying VAT means multiplying by ; stripping it out means dividing by the same factor. It is not the same as taking the rate off the VAT-inclusive price, as the stripping-out example shows.

Stripping out VAT is the perfect example of the asymmetry between multiplying by and dividing by : getting the operation wrong leads to a plausible but incorrect result.
Example — Stripping out VAT
An invoice shows EUR VAT included at . Taxable amount: EUR; VAT: EUR. Typical mistake: “I take off ”, which would give EUR, wrong. The asymmetric structure versus is the same one we saw with GDP.
Dividing by gives the correct taxable amount of EUR; multiplying by instead gives EUR, because it takes off and not of the taxable amount. It is the very same asymmetry as an increase followed by a decrease.

Esempio — Mark-up del commerciante

A percentage margin can be computed on the selling price or on the cost: these are two different bases and give different results. The case of the margin on the selling price requires solving a small equation, because the unknown also appears in the base.
Example — The trader's mark-up
A trader buys at the price EUR and wants a margin of on the selling price (not on the cost). Setting as the selling price: If instead they wanted a mark-up of on the cost, EUR would suffice: the difference between the two bases is always a source of confusion.
The margin on the selling price leads to EUR, the one on the cost to EUR: clarifying with respect to what the percentage is computed is, once again, the decisive question.
