Some products of polynomials recur so often that it is worth learning their formulas by heart: square and cube of a binomial, sum times difference, square of a trinomial. These formulas save time both in expanding and in factorising. A practical aid for applying them without mistakes comes from the “method of shapes”, from the triangle diagram and from Tartaglia’s triangle.

Esempio. . Scrivo .
- .
- .
- Verifica: . ✓

Observation — Method of shapes
To apply the special-product formulas, geometric shapes are assigned to the terms: the first term is the “circle” , the second is the “square” .
Example: with and . Substituting: The same method works for , and : you draw the shapes in place of the terms, then substitute.
The method of shapes in reverse (recognition). Given a trinomial, I can check whether it is a square of a binomial using the shapes in reverse:
- Is the first term ? I find .
- Is the last term ? I find .
- Is the middle term ? If so, the trinomial is . ✓
Example. . I write .
- .
- .
- Check: . ✓
Therefore .

Esempio. . Sospetto un quadrato di trinomio.
- Vertici: , , .
- Lati: ? Il termine è , quindi il segno è .
- . ✓
- ? Il termine è , quindi il segno è .

Observation — Triangle diagram for
To recognise whether a 6-term polynomial is a square of a trinomial, a triangle diagram is used: the squares of the three terms at the vertices, the double products on the sides.
At the vertices the squares of the terms, on the sides their double products.
Example. . I suspect a square of a trinomial.
- Vertices: , , .
- Sides: ? The term is , so the sign is .
- . ✓
- ? The term is , so the sign is .
