Nash equilibrium

The central idea of game theory is that of a stable configuration: nobody has any interest in changing their move on their own.

Definition — Nash equilibrium, pure strategies

A pair of pure strategies $(s_1^*, s_2^*)$ is a Nash equilibrium if no player gains by deviating unilaterally: given $s_2^*$, $s_1^*$ is optimal for G1; given $s_1^*$, $s_2^*$ is optimal for G2. In pure strategies it may fail to exist; in mixed strategies it always exists for finite games (Nash, 1950).
