Before computing any index, the first step in organising a set of data is to collect them in a frequency table, which counts how many times each value appears.
Definition — Frequency table
Given a sample of observations taking values (or classes) :
- absolute frequency : number of observations equal to ;
- relative frequency (always in );
- percentage frequency ;
- cumulative frequency .
One always checks: and .
The cumulative frequency is useful for answering questions of the type “how many observations are at most ?”: it is read directly off the last column.
