The figure shows two parabolas RR and JJ. From the graph you read that RR opens upward, has vertex VR(3;1)V_R(-3;1) and passes through (1;3)(-1;3); while JJ opens downward, meets the xx-axis at x=5x=-5 and x=1x=1, and has vertex VJ(2;3)V_J(-2;3).

  • (a) find the vertices and axis intercepts of RR and JJ;
  • (b) find the equation of RR;
  • (c) find the equation of JJ;
  • (d) show that RJ=5x26+13x3+236R-J=\dfrac{5x^2}{6}+\dfrac{13x}{3}+\dfrac{23}{6};
  • (e) set RJ=0R-J=0, solve, and explain the meaning of the solutions.
