Solve the equation 2x2−7x+3=0 using the quadratic formula.
Solution
With a=2, b=−7, c=3 the discriminant is
Δ=b2−4ac=(−7)2−4⋅2⋅3=49−24=25.
Hence
x=47±25=47±5,
so x1=412=3 and x2=42=21.
Check:2⋅9−7⋅3+3=18−21+3=0 and 2⋅41−7⋅21+3=21−27+3=0. Correct.
x=3∨x=21
