Let and be two consecutive angles, that is, sharing the vertex and the side , and lying on opposite sides of . Given that they are supplementary, prove that they are adjacent, i.e. that the sides and are opposite rays.
Solution
By hypothesis .
Let be the ray opposite to . The rays and form a straight angle, so the angles and are supplementary:
On the other hand, from the hypothesis,
Therefore . The rays and both lie on the same side of (the side opposite to ) and form congruent angles with : by the uniqueness of the angle of given measure on a fixed side, they coincide, that is .
Hence is the ray opposite to : the two angles are adjacent.
