The most delicate step is not solving the equation, but building it from a text. The method is always the same (we shall take it up systematically in the chapter “How to solve a problem”):

  1. Read and outline: what is being asked? what are the data?
  2. Choose the unknown: a quantity that, once known, determines all the others.
  3. Translate into an equation: write the relations between the quantities.
  4. Solve and check: the solution must make sense in the context (an age cannot be negative, nor can a time).

Choosing the unknown is the strategic move: choosing it well makes the equation simple, choosing it badly complicates it needlessly.
