Before learning to solve equations, let us clarify exactly what they are and what “solving them” means.

Definition — Equation

An equation is an equality between two expressions containing one or more unknowns. Solving an equation means finding the values of the unknown that make the equality true.

Not all values of the unknown make the equality true: the solution is precisely the set of those that do. The two expressions on either side of the equals sign are called the sides of the equation, the first and the second.
